Monthly Beauty Box Subscriptions

Here we are friends, it’s already Wednesday. This week is speeding by and I can’t say I’m mad about it. We are now in serious countdown mode and I’m trying to finish up all those last-minute details before leaving Tuesday to head to Nashville. Are y’all tired of hearing about it yet? #sorrynotsorry? If you happen to be new around here, our son is getting married on the 26th and we are over the moon happy for him and his darling fiance.

Today I thought we’d take a look at a few different Beauty Box subscriptions and I’d give you my “professional” opinion. Once you pick yourself up from laughing at that statement, we can move on. LOL

Are you familiar with the beauty box concept? There are a lot of them out there right now and at different price points. I think they’d be the perfect gift for a tween who is just starting to explore beauty products or to send a fun little monthly pick me up to a college girl,  but they are also great fun for anyone who wants the opportunity to try new products they might not necessarily purchase or be aware of.

For those of you who have been around here for a while you know I started my beauty box exploration with the Sephora Play Box. Like most of the beauty box services Sephora Play is a monthly box delivery. The cost is $10 per box/month and ships for free.  So how are the products sent to you each month determined and do you get to pick your products? Well the short answer is no, you don’t pick. You fill out your “Play Profile” and based on your answers the Sephora “experts” pick products they feel will match you. You get everything from hair, to cosmetics, to fragrance and each month a little bag is included.

This is an example of one of my Play boxes I received. Most months there would be 1 or 2 products I really liked and then several that I was pretty indifferent about. The treStique highlighter that came in this box was one of my favorite finds that I still use. Note to self: I need to order one.

I received the Play boxes for about 3 months and then decided to stop for a while. I think you’ll see a pattern here in a bit. HA! If you are interested in reading a couple of my reviews you can find them here and here.

After stopping the Play box for a while I was ready to try again and this time I went with the ipsy Glam bag.  Ipsy is done on the same premise as the Play box and for the same price also with free shipping. You take a profile quiz and then the bags are curated to send you things they think might interest you.

I did discover in this bag that I loved the it Bye-Bye Under Eye Waterproof Concealer, so much so I ordered it with a brush. This is the brush I have and I love it, but you can buy a packaged deal here. You can read a full review of this ipsy bag here.

This is my bag from this month that came Monday. I’m going to take the face-masks to Nashville for Katie and I to try together. I like the Kensie perfume and the little spray is the perfect size to go in my purse. I tried the Tarte finishing powder yesterday, but the jury is still out on it and the lip crayon. The nail polish {which is full size} is a beautiful springy pink.

Both the Sephora Play Box and ipsy bag can be cancelled at anytime.

If you aren’t interested in actually subscribing to a monthly bag there’s great news. Target is now selling a variety of boxes in store or for order online for $7 and free shipping. I wanted to check one out for myself so I picked one up. Gotta’ say, it’s a good deal.

The ‘Wakeup and Makeup’ box came with 4 full size products and some sample size products as well. The Dove Dry Invisible antiperspirants is worth almost that much on its own. There were at least 4 boxes to choose from in the store I was in and one was full of different face masks which would be fun for a girls night or teen slumber party.

I think I’m going to cancel my ipsy subscription and now try Birchbox. It’s the same premise as the others and the same price and if you order your first box now, you get a second one for FREE. You know me and the word FREE are quite chummy and after your first box you get to pick one of the products in your box and I love the idea of that, so stay tuned.

Now tell me, do you do a subscription and if so what’s your favorite? One of these days I’m going to work my way up to the “big dog” box of FabFitFun.

  • Oooooooh thanks for all the info! I haven't done a subscription box yet, there are so many to choose from! I like the idea of trying new things. I need to check out what Target has, that seems like a great deal. It's nice that you can cancel your subscription whenever you want too, it's nice not be locked in. I love that pink nail polish - you know me and light pink for nails, lol.
Less than a week and you'll be waking up in Nashville - woo hoo!!!!

    • I cancelled my ipsy last night after finishing this post and I’m going to do Birchbox when I get back from the wedding. The Target boxes are a SUPER deal! They look like they are sold out online right now, but I bet they are cuing up the next curation (big word, ehh?!?) I thought about you when I got the pink polish. It’s almost the exact color as your favorite OPI. I think it’s a “natural” polish. I’ll do my toes with it (eventually) and see how well it last. Happy Hump Day friend!!! (look at me getting my post up early) XOXO

  • I don't get a beauty box, but I get Rocksbox and love it!! The new jewelry every month is so fun. I really do like try new beauty products, I've been curious about Birchbox!

    • I think I’ll go on and sign up while you get a 2nd box for free. I can always cancel…LOL (which we both know will be the outcome in a few months. HA) Hope you’re having a great week! XO

  • This is such a good breakdown of info about the beauty boxes! I have tried quite a few of them. GlossyBox in the UK, Birchbox, ipsy, and now Sephora play. My fave so far is the Sephora box since it seems to have the most things I actually will use. But they have all been fun. I have also tried the PopSugar subscription box. It was fun, but there were a lot of things I didn't need or want. I think I might ask for Fabfit fun for my bday in September. Have a wonderful countdown to the nuptials!!

    • Thanks Tanya! I’ll have to add PopSugar to my list. If you get FabFitFun, I’ll be excited to hear all about it. Hope you’re having a great week! XO

  • I've done birchbox subscriptions off and on and I've gotten ipsy a few times too. I think they are fun, but if I get them every month, it gets to be repetitive and I have way too many products. I love the idea of the Target box! It does look like a great deal!

    • I agree Laura. I think that’s why I end up quitting. I get tired of having misc stuff lying around that I don’t use. I actually have a little pile on my counter right now to take to the wedding and see if any of the girls want to try them. Hope you’re having a great week! XO

  • Not sorry at all, I am soooo excited for your baby boy! You can talk bout it all day! Our Anniversary is the 29th. May is a very good month! I never know which box is which so this is super cool. Heck, I cannot even remember which ones I’ve done. Soooo excited to see your dress....prettiest mama of the groom ever!

    • Aw, thanks sweet friend. I just can’t believe how close we really are. It’s going to be so fun and wonderful. Hope you’re having a great week! XO

  • So excited for your family and hope we get to follow along a little with the festivities on your stories! I personally don't do any subscription boxes but I enjoy seeing what others get in their boxes and what works/what doesn't!

    • Well as you can tell I start and stop…LOL. I think after a few boxes and having things lying around I don’t use, I’m just ready to quit. Thanks so much. I’m going to try to remember to post on my stories. I get going though and lose my wits. I can’t believe it’s almost here. I’ve been ordering jewelry (& spanx) today.? Have a great evening, Gina! XO

  • I haven't tried a beauty box for awhile. I used to do Glossybox and always got great products - but it was kind of expensive. So exciting that the wedding is so close!

    • I haven’t tried that one…YET ;)
We are in full on wedding mode. So EXCITING!!!

  • I got the treStique highlighter in my Ipsy bag awhile ago, but I have no idea how to use it! Lol! Maybe I need to research that! I have never tried Birchbox, I am curious to hear how you'll like it. I used to get Ipsy and did for over a year. Now I only get FabFitFun, which seems a little more manageable since it is every quarter and I have more time to use up stuff. I've wanted to try the Sephora one, but I've always heard Ipsy is better. I'm afraid I'll be disappointed. I need to look at Target for one of those boxes, that'd be fun! Oh wow!!! The wedding is almost here. I seriously can't believe it! Enjoy!!!!

    • I watched a video to figure out how to use it. I’m not sure if this was the one, but it shows the exact same stuff.

  • I had Birchbox for about a year but I stopped it. I had too many products that were the exact same purpose. I didn't know Target had a box. For $7? With some full size products? I think that's one I'm going to look into. Thanks for sharing!! =)

    • That’s what I feel like I run into after just a few months, Melanie. I can’t wait to see Targets next round of boxes. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Hope you are having a great week! XO
