Tips For Finding the Right Jumpsuit

Welcome to the June edition of Ageless Style. The first Tuesday of every month, ten over 40 bloggers present a different style theme and show a myriad of ways to wear it, all the while proving you can still be fashionable and on trend over 40 and beyond. This month Paula from Dimples on My What (love the name of her blog) picked our theme of jumpsuits or rompers. So today I’m going to share some tips for finding the right jumpsuit. I don’t know about you, but for me it’s like finding a needle in a haystack.

Earlier this spring I started down the road of looking for a jumpsuit. I mean, seriously, how hard could it be? Turns out it was quite the challenge. You see I’m on the short side with a slightly pear shape and very short waisted. Not a great combo when looking for a jumpsuit. Throughout this “hunt” I figured a few things out and thought today would be the perfect opportunity to share it with you.

All of these?? jumpsuits are too fitted at the waist for me. They sit right at my hips and most of them “pooched” out in the back, because they were too long for my torso. I did like the plaid one, but for some reason Kent didn’t, so I returned it. So let’s figure out how to find the right jumpsuit.

Let’s start with the basics:
1 ~ Find the perfect fit. For me that means I need one not too tailored at the waist. If you have more of a straight shape, you’ll want to try to define your waist to give you more of a shape.
2 ~ If you like the jumpsuit, but not necessarily the way it fits at your waist, try adding a jean jacket or blazer.
3 ~ Wear heels with a wide leg jumpsuit to create the illusion of a longer, leaner leg.
4 ~ Wear a solid color jumpsuit, if you are trying to minimize your size, stick to black or navy.

For me, I finally figured out two pieces are better than one. Buying a top and bottom that look like a jumpsuit was the best solution. Not to mention you can then mix and match the pieces to get more bang for your buck. Check out this post to see all the different ways I’ve been able to use these pieces.

There’s no shortage of jumpsuits out there, so I feel sure you can find the right one if you just persevere. I hope these tips for finding the right jumpsuit will help. Remember, you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince. #sameforjumpsuits.

  • Lisa, I think you look adorable in all of these jumpsuits! It’s funny that you are struggling with fit because you are short waisted. I struggle with the fit because I am long waisted! I get that awful front wedgie effect. I finally found two rompers that I love, but I am having the hardest time with the one piece pant suits. They make me look huge around the hips and waist. Maybe I need to try belting them or adding a jacket like you suggested. This month we are featuring rompers and jumpsuits on The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book. I would love for you to join us! I linked a post with the details.

    • Hey Shelbee! I know, it's a hoot that we have the opposite issues. If you have any hips at all, I thing it makes it even more challenging. I actually did send my jumpsuit to Nancy...her email was on the reply. XOXO

  • Great post and tips my friend! You look terrific in all of them but the two piece is my favorite! And so are YOU!
    xo,
    Kellyann

  • It is really hard to find the perfect jumpsuit and these tips are helpful! All of your jumpsuits are so cute on you but I agree with Kellyann, the two piece is my favorite!

    • Thanks Heather!!! I'm watching the CMT Awards and thinking about your and your trip. You're going to have the best time!!! XOXO

  • Such amazing tips ! Thank you for this awesome post. After getting a few jumpsuits from Amazon I realized that I need to find a better fit for me. Have a fabulous day !

    • Thanks so much Tammy! It sure seems to be a lot more challenging than you'd think. Hope all is well with you! XOXO

  • They are everywhere right now, aren't they, Lisa. And my mom is totally stealing your trick tomorrow on my blog!! I just thought that was so brilliant. Not that she did it as well as you, but it works!!
    XOXO

    • They sure are and you feel left out if you don't have at least one. HA! Your mom looked beautiful in her take on the two pieces. XO

  • My jumpsuit collection keeps growing and growing and I'm not mad about it! I know you searched high and low for the right jumpsuit-glad you finally found a fantastic option for you! It looks fabulous!

  • I agree, they are a hard to fit piece but can look so cool when you find the right one. Bathroom breaks aside, they make it super easy to look pulled together.

P.S. I must know how you are getting your affiliate links into those photos! ;-)

    • I love the two piece route. Do you mean the gallery of jumpsuits at the end of the post? That's a tool through Reward Style. If you want a referral, I'm happy to put one in! XO

  • Good tips. Jumpsuits really are tough to fit. I have the problem of them often being too short in the torso.

  • I think you found the perfect solution for anyone who has a fit issue. I may go the two-piece route, because I'd want to wash the top each time.
