The Best Homemade Ice Cream

Hi friends and happy Friday! Happy 4th of July weekend too. I don’t know about you and your family, but we L O V E ice cream in this house. And just in time for the 4th of July, I have the best homemade ice cream recipe to share with you. I know that’s a pretty lofty statement, but I think if you try it, you’ll totally agree! Everyone who has this ice cream asks for the recipe….and guess what. It’s so crazy easy you won’t even believe it.

If you know me IRL (in real life), then you’ll know I’m painfully honest. I have to “confess” anytime I do something…and that usually means something silly. I’ll confess that I ate something, or bought something. LOL So right now I’m confessing to you that I’ve shared this recipe before, but it was 6 years ago, and there are a lot of new people here who may not have found it.

This is basic recipe for vanilla ice cream, but with a few tweaks, it turns into coffee chocolate chip. Seriously, this stuff is soooooo yummy.

I have a Cuisinart Ice Cream machine that makes making homemade ice cream a breeze. I even have two of the freezer barrels which is super convenient. This recipe makes just the right amount for two of the freezer barrels. You keep them in the freezer, and then when you’re ready to whip up some ice cream, you pull one out and voila, you have homemade ice cream.

Homemade Ice Cream

This can be made as vanilla ice cream, but I make coffee chocolate chip. The added ingredients are included

Ingredients

  • 3 C Half and Half
  • 1 1/2 C Sugar
  • 1 T Vanilla
  • 3 C Heavy Cream

To make Coffee Chocolate Chip Add the following

  • 2-3 T Instant Coffee
  • Mini Chocolate Chips

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl combine light cream, sugar, and vanilla. Stir till sugar dissolves. Stir in whipping cream. Freeze in a 4 or 5 quart ice cream freezer according to manufacturers directions. Makes 2 quarts
  • To make my families favorite Coffee Chocolate Chip Ice Cream, make the following adjustments to the original recipe.
Prepare as above, except dissolve 2 – 3 Tablespoons (I use 3) instant coffee crystals in the light cream mixture before adding whipping cream. If using an old timey hand crank or electric ice cream maker that uses ice and salt add 1/2 cup (or more) of miniature chocolate chips to the mix before starting machine. If using ice cream maker like mine, wait until the ice cream is almost done which will take around 20 minutes and add chocolate chips for the last 5 minutes of churning/mixing.

This is seriously so easy and so delicious. Here are some great ice cream accessories to go with the ice cream machine. One of these machines would make a great wedding gift. You could hand write this recipe on a card and include it. You will forever be remembered whenever they make ice cream in their new machine.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend!

Lisa

  • I'd have to check back through my blog for our recipe... but I think the one we made was pretty similar and you are right in that it was SO GOOD! Only problem we have is that it never makes enough for all of us to have some. LOL

  • I'm totally going to make this when the girls are over next time! I just need to get a new ice cream maker! Checking out the one you linked!
