Welcome to the June edition of Ageless Style. The first Tuesday of every month, ten over 40 bloggers present a different style theme and show a myriad of ways to wear it, all the while proving you can still be fashionable and on trend over 40 and beyond. This month Paula from Dimples on My What (love the name of her blog) picked our theme of jumpsuits or rompers. So today I’m going to share some tips for finding the right jumpsuit. I don’t know about you, but for me it’s like finding a needle in a haystack.
Earlier this spring I started down the road of looking for a jumpsuit. I mean, seriously, how hard could it be? Turns out it was quite the challenge. You see I’m on the short side with a slightly pear shape and very short waisted. Not a great combo when looking for a jumpsuit. Throughout this “hunt” I figured a few things out and thought today would be the perfect opportunity to share it with you.
All of these?? jumpsuits are too fitted at the waist for me. They sit right at my hips and most of them “pooched” out in the back, because they were too long for my torso. I did like the plaid one, but for some reason Kent didn’t, so I returned it. So let’s figure out how to find the right jumpsuit.
Let’s start with the basics:
1 ~ Find the perfect fit. For me that means I need one not too tailored at the waist. If you have more of a straight shape, you’ll want to try to define your waist to give you more of a shape.
2 ~ If you like the jumpsuit, but not necessarily the way it fits at your waist, try adding a jean jacket or blazer.
3 ~ Wear heels with a wide leg jumpsuit to create the illusion of a longer, leaner leg.
4 ~ Wear a solid color jumpsuit, if you are trying to minimize your size, stick to black or navy.
For me, I finally figured out two pieces are better than one. Buying a top and bottom that look like a jumpsuit was the best solution. Not to mention you can then mix and match the pieces to get more bang for your buck. Check out this post to see all the different ways I’ve been able to use these pieces.
There’s no shortage of jumpsuits out there, so I feel sure you can find the right one if you just persevere. I hope these tips for finding the right jumpsuit will help. Remember, you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince. #sameforjumpsuits.

Shelbee on the Edge says
Lisa, I think you look adorable in all of these jumpsuits! It’s funny that you are struggling with fit because you are short waisted. I struggle with the fit because I am long waisted! I get that awful front wedgie effect. I finally found two rompers that I love, but I am having the hardest time with the one piece pant suits. They make me look huge around the hips and waist. Maybe I need to try belting them or adding a jacket like you suggested. This month we are featuring rompers and jumpsuits on The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book. I would love for you to join us! I linked a post with the details.

Hey Shelbee! I know, it’s a hoot that we have the opposite issues. If you have any hips at all, I thing it makes it even more challenging. I actually did send my jumpsuit to Nancy…her email was on the reply. XOXO

I agree, they are a hard to fit piece but can look so cool when you find the right one. Bathroom breaks aside, they make it super easy to look pulled together.

Julie Caron says
Good tips. Jumpsuits really are tough to fit. I have the problem of them often being too short in the torso.

They sure are Julie! Who’d think it would be so hard? LOL
Kim Malkiewicz says
I think you found the perfect solution for anyone who has a fit issue. I may go the two-piece route, because I’d want to wash the top each time.
Lisa Richardson says
Thanks Kim! I was thrilled to find this one, for sure!! XO
Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom says
That Leopard one is really pretty and unique, but I also love the blue color it comes in. I need to get a jumpsuit in a solid color, all of mine are patterned or striped!! Love these tips!

I think we are not alone, Fonda! XOXO
Chrissy Rowden says
I love that floral “jumpsuit” on you…it was smart to go with two pieces. Honestly, I went through a lot of jumpsuits at target and was surprised by the challenge of finding one that fit. Even the one I found, has moments when I see my reflection and question! lol. Anyway, enjoyed the post my friend. I may need to go the two piece route.
Lisa Richardson says
Thanks Chrissy! I was so thrilled to find it! XO
Living on Cloud Nine says
2 pieces work perfect for you and you have found some cute ones!! Floral fun and always, always looking FABULOUS!! xo
Lisa Richardson says
Two pieces are definitely the way to go for me!!! XOXO
JL@ A Pocketful of Polka Dots says
So many cute jumpsuits! I love the polka dot option (of course!) and the dark floral separates option. I had no idea the separate “jumpsuit” even existed! Finding the right fit for jumpsuits and rompers really is a challenge. Thanks for tips!
Lisa Richardson says
Thanks Jennie! You have a bunch of super cute ones yourself. XO
Shelly @ The Queen in Between says
Such great tips! I love that plaid on you. I truly think I love a good romper once I top with a jacket of some sort. The bunching in the back is my biggest issue and the 2nd is most of the crouches are at my knees haha
Lisa Richardson says
Sounds like they fit us very similar. I kinda wish I hadn’t listened to Kent and had kept the plaid. Live and learn. LOL
NancysFashionStyle says
I am like Shelbee, struggling with the right one because I’m long waisted too. But I found a good one, had to because I had no jumpsuit!
Daenel T says
Jumpsuits/rompers are such fun to wear, but – oh my word – is it difficult to find one that fits. Your idea of buying two pieces is genius. The one you’re wearing is very pretty.
Lisa Richardson says
Isn’t that the truth Daenel! I was thrilled to achieve the look with two pieces. Thank you!!!
Leslie Clingan says
I finally found a jumpsuit that I was comfortable enough to leave the house in! I have heavier than you but built similarly. Short-waisted and a bit pear shaped. The jumpsuit I wanted to love was chambray. The jumpsuit that loved (well, liked) me was vertical stripes. And adding heels really did make a difference. Great tips. Will keep them in mind if I decide to push the envelope and shop for another one.
Lisa Richardson says
Thanks Leslie. I’m glad you found one you like. It’s no small task!
Shugunna Alexander says
I really liked the plaid jumpsuit, yet all the looks are gorgeous.
