Let’s talk about why I’m trying a natural deodorant. I feel like everywhere I turn I see something about using more natural products in everything from makeup, to skincare to hygiene products. Deodorant is a big one, and there are scads of them out there. You might remember last year I did a series of posts with Simply Earth Essential Oils. Well I was approached by their new sister company, Wild Root about trying a natural deodorant they are launching this month.

I was very leery about going natural, especially with deodorant. Let’s get real and personal. I’m a stinker. HA! I’ve always been a heavy sweater and especially when I was younger, and I absolutely hated it. Being self conscious about sweat rings and body odor is no fun for a young girl. Thankfully with age that has decreased some, but I was still doubtful a natural deodorant would be enough for me.

There’s a lot of research to support the benefits of going natural with deodorant. Here are some of them…
One of the biggest components of deodorant is aluminum, and if you’re a heavy sweater, the more aluminum, the more effective it is, but aluminum causes toxins to build up in the body. Toxins are expelled from your body through sweat and using a natural deodorant allows your body to sweat, keeping toxins from building up.
You may have also heard that aluminum is thought to possibly increase chances of breast cancer. #scary However, not enough research has been done to know for sure whether aluminum-containing deodorant is directly linked to breast cancer.
When you switch to a natural deodorant, your body will go through a “detox” period. Aluminum-containing antiperspirants clog your sweat glands to keep you from sweating. The detox period is the period of time your body needs to rid the bacteria and toxins from your body and can last from 1 day to 3 weeks, but most often 3-10 days.

A formula with baking soda is a great fit for people with strong body odor. The baking soda adds and extra layer of bacteria-killing protection. Just like it kills odors in the fridge, it works on our bodies too. WildRoot has two formulas, one of which has the addition of baking soda.

I’m happy to report that I’ve been using 2 of the WildRoot deodorants for the last month and with great success. I honestly didn’t notice the detox period, so I can only assume I went through it. I haven’t had any issues with feeling like the deodorant isn’t doing it’s job. #ifyouknowwhatimean #andithinkyoudo
The deodorants come in two formulas with several varieties to choose from.
Performance Line:
Wildflower (Lavender and Ylang Ylang)
Tall Pine (Cedarwood and Pine)
Citrus Leaf (Lime and Sage)
Sensitive Line (no baking soda):
Wildflower (Lavender and Ylang Ylang)
Meadow (Lemongrass and Mandarin)
Unscented
The deodorants are scented with essential oils. I’ve been using the Wildflower and Citrus Leaf from the performance line. They smell really beautiful. I have always preferred using unscented deodorants because I hate it when you sweat and then smell like some kind of weird baby powder or stinky flower. When I wear these deodorants, if I happen to sweat, I haven’t noticed any kind of scent. I can smell them when I apply them, but then the smell just dissipates.

Well I’m a stinker too! I have never tried a natural deodorant but this sounds intriguing. Great post my friend, so informative!

Stinkers stick together. LOL You should give this a try. It actually works!! XO
Been wanting to try one of these natural brands. This one looks great to me! LOVE that it’s created with essential oils!! Happy Fresh Monday babe!
Oh you should try this one. I really like it. Happy Monday sweetie!! XO
I switched to a natural deodorant a few years ago and the detox period wasn’t that bad. Love that this one is made with essential oils!

Yes, they smell so pretty. XO
This was the push I needed to try it! I am a heavy sweeter as well and my brief periods of naturals did not go well. I had no idea about the detox period. Thanks!
I’m scared of the detox period especially since I lift weights 3 days a week! EEK
I think you’d be fine, but I totally get it. I used my regular deodorant while we traveled at Christmas and didn’t have any problem switching back and forth. XO
I have some Wildroot on the way. Anxious to try it. I am not much of a sweater because I am always COLD!!! Hoping it will work well for me. And smell as delicious as it sounds.
Oh that’s exciting! I hope you like it. I really have been so pleasantly surprised. XO
I haven’t heard of this company, but how nice to know it is Simply Earth’s sister company. I switched to a natural deodorant last year and sometimes I will wear my regular deodorant still if I know I’ll be outside or sweating a lot! I can wear my natural deodorant most days, though… I’ll be sure to check this one out!

Yes, you should check it out. That’s great that you’ve already made the switch. These really do smell so good. XO

Oh good!!! Happy to help! Hope the New Year is treating you well. Ran into April yesterday….I guess I’ll be seeing you later this year. 😉 XOXO
Great post, Lisa! So did you have to go without wearing ANY deodorant through the detox phase? Maybe I missed that. I’ve read things about Native natural deodorant and they suggest that. I just can’t do that! I’m stinky, too, and poor Alise gets sweat stains! It drives her nuts and breaks my heart! Hope your first week of 2020 is off to a great start!
Thanks Laura! No, I didn’t have to go without wearing deodorant. I know how you feel for Alise, Katie has the exact same issue and absolutely hates it. Poor girls!!! XO
I took Alise to the dermatologist and she put her on some meds, but Alise wouldn’t take them consistently and do the steps that she needed to do to help with the sweating. So I told myself that I wasn’t going to worry with it anymore.
I swapped to a natural deodorant recently too and while I feel like I might be sweating more I don’t feel like it’s smelly (or leaving wet rings) so I’m OK with that and I like knowing I’m not unnecessarily exposing myself to chemicals. I am trying to slowly switch over all our soaps and cleaning supplies to more natural plant based alternatives this year.
So far deodorant is the only real change I’ve made. That’s great that you’re trying to change out more. XO
I’ve only tried one natural deodorant so far…it was okay but I only use it for travel now for some reason (don’t ask me why…ha ha). I may need to look into this.
XOXO
Jodie
Oh you definitely should, Jodie! XOXO
I’ve used several brands and have only liked one. However, I haven’t tried this one! Good for you Lisa. 🙂
Oooo, give this one a try Chrissy. XO
I had my son use some natural deodorants when he started using it. Now he just uses a vaiiety. As for myself, I don’t have any issues with what I use but I do like the idea of using something more natural!

Give this one a try Mireille. It might just be the one? XO
I keep hearing the push to use natural deodorants but I get nervous about potentially smelling if it isn’t as effective. Good to know that you had a good experience with Wild Root!
Yes! Thankfully it worked! XO
Good post! We have been using deodorant without aluminium for years now. Stinker?? Ha ha, had to laugh.
Good for you Nancy! Have a great weekend! XO
How interesting that there is a detox period when switching to natural deodorant! I must have made the switch in the middle of winter when I was freezing all the time and didn’t sweat anyway. Ha! Glad you found one that you are liking!
Yeah, I didn’t realize that until I started reading some info on natural deodorants. XO
Most natural deodorants are fine for eliminating odor, but an
antiperspirant is necessary to eliminate perspiration. This always
seems to be glossed over in their advertising.
Good for you, Lisa. I have more of a problem with wetness, a lot of it, so I’ll probably be buried with toxins in my armpits-eew! I’ve even soaked through old fashioned dress shields.
Oh yes, been there, done that. Thankfully I’ve slowed down a bit…maybe you will too eventually. XOXO
I love natural deos too. I’d love to try this. Thanks for sharing dear!

Oh I hope you give it a try, Jessica!!! XO
I’ve had the pleasure of sampling Wild root, as well. I am currently using another natural deodorant and Wild root works so much better. I’m super excited for the launch so I can make the switch.
I’ve been super impressed with the deodorant. I’m so happy you like it to. XO
