It’s that time of year, and you may be wondering what are the best swimsuits for women over 40. I have 6 of my favorite styles, from various brands that I enjoy wearing, and I thought you might like them too.
First let me tell you what are my criteria for swimsuits are:
- Full coverage in the bottom/back side
- Not too revealing on the front
- A good weight material (not too thin)
- Light colors are lined (no one wants to get wet and then look like an x-ray 😉)
- Padded bra/cups
My favorite style of suits for years has been a tankini. I love them for the ease of putting on, taking off, and going to the bathroom during a pool/beach day. Pulling a wet suit off and on can be a challenge. This suit is a tankini, and the material is a piqué. It’s beautiful, and the style is very flattering. The neck is a halter neck. I typically wear medium or size 8 in swimwear, and both of these pieces are mediums. The bottoms fit perfectly, but the top is too big. The small top is on its way to me. The bottom is a high waist, full coverage and I love it. You could easily pair it with other tops. I’d also like to get this top to go with it.
I have to talk about this HAT! It is so cute, and I love it. I was wearing this one for these photos at a friends, but I ordered it for myself and have already worn it an received compliments. The bag is very popular and I’ve found a site that they are frequently on sale. You can carry it as a tote or a purse.
While I already said my favorite style suit is a tankini, last year I shifted and started wearing quite a few one piece suits. This suit is also a new one from Spanx this year. I adore the color. It’s also a piqué fabric. The coverage is perfect, and the style is classic. The hat is by the same maker as the one above, and I got it as well. I never go out in the sun without a hat. I had laser treatments on my face about 4 years ago to undo sun damage, and I’m certainly not about to let the sun get to me again. (If you’re interested in seeing that journey, click here) Did you also know that if your hair is colored or highlighted it needs protection from the sun? It’s true. My mom was a hairdresser, and always told me to wear a hat. The sun will bleach highlighted or colored hair, and the sun is also drying and can make your hair damaged. The moral of the story is invest in good hats. These have built in UPF for your hair and skin.
SIZING: Wearing a medium and it fits well.
I love a fun detail on a suit. This one has a beautiful gold chain at the shoulder. I’m also a big fan of the one shoulder style currently. I find them to be comfortable and flattering. They’re also good if you’re active in the water and/or playing with children. You don’t have to worry about a malfunction…if you know what I mean. This suit is a Magicsuit. It’s from the same maker as Miraclesuit. The difference is in the amount of compression. This suit is a 2 out of 3, while Miraclesuits are 3/3 compression.
I really like the amount of compression this swimsuit has. It’s got enough to shape and hold without being in a straight jacket, and having to wrestle to get in it. If you’ve ever tried or worn a Miraclesuit, you know they hold you in, but they’re hard to get on. I think a lot of women over 40 begin looking for swimsuits that have more structure.
SIZING: I get my normal swimsuit size in this one. Size 8
I was introduced to the Summersalt brand 2 years ago, and they’ve honestly become my go to suits. They are super cute, comfortable, fun colors and styles, and you can choose the amount of coverage on your backside. I go for full coverage because as Katie puts it…we have “dump trucks”.
I also love all the matching cover up options they offer. The swim skirt is my favorite, and this year I’ve gotten a pair of the shorts I’m loving. The shorts look like a running short, but no built in liner.
SIZING TIP: I find the Summersalt suits to run generous. I typically wear a size 8/medium in swimsuits, but in these I wear a 6, and I get smalls in all the skirts/pants/shorts.
This is another Summersalt suit. This style comes in a wide range of color combinations and solids and I have several of both. I wore this one to the pool yesterday. It’s easy to put the strap under your arm if you like to avoid strap marks in your tan. This skirt is just like the one above. I also have it in navy…see…I told you I loved it.😉
This is my most recent Summersalt suit, and it’s one of my favorites. Not only is is so cute, it’s comfortable and I can drop the straps down and the top will stay up while I’m laying out in the sun. If you’re larger chested, that might not be your experience….I’m not sure. These are the shorts I’ was referring to. So cute.
Here is another post I did on swimwear for women over 50.
Here is a post with AMAZON swim covers.

The 4th of July is just around the corner and that means lots of cookouts and backyard BBQ’s. There are so many fun outdoor games for July 4th, and you can order them on Amazon to get them in time. These would be fun to have set up in stations around your yard, or some of them could easily be carried to a park if you’re gathering there.
I’ve seen several of these in use at the beach as well. Big kids/young adults and even older adults sometimes enjoy having something to do when spending an entire day on the beach.
GIANT WOODEN YARD DICE – You can play two games with these giant dice. Yardzee or Yardkle. HAHAHA!
YARD DARTS – Not only are these yard darts, they glow in the dark. Now personally, by the time it gets dark during the summer we’re already in our jammies, but if you like to walk on the wild side, these are for you. LOL
YARD CONNECT FOUR – Did you have Connect Four as a kid? I did, and I loved it. I think this would be fun, and even the littles could play.
BADMINTON – This looks like such an easy way to play Badminton. This game has been around forever. This net doesn’t require spikes, and I think that would keep it from sagging.
LADDER TOSS – We bought one of these years ago for Katie’s graduation party. I had played it somewhere and it was a lot of fun. We will be pulling this out the next time we have a gathering.
HORSESHOES – I haven’t played horseshoes in years, but I used to love it. Most kids these days have probably never heard of it. Let’s bring it back.
BOCCE BALL – The only time I’ve played this was at an Italian restaurant, but it was a lot of fun.
GIANT JENGA – Not gonna’ lie, this one scares me a little. We went to a party with a reallly giant one, and I was terrified it would fall on someone. I think this one is a slightly smaller scale, so probably a lot safer.
CORN HOLE – This is a crowd pleaser, and I see a lot of people who take them (in a wagon) out on the beach to play. Little kids love playing with the bean bags for this one.
Check out this post with red, white and blue looks to go with your new outdoor games for July 4th.
Or this post has more red, white and blue all American summer style that would be fantastic for the 4th.
Have you signed up for my newsletters yet? You can do it at the bottom of this page. On Monday’s I share last weeks top 6 sellers, and on Friday’s there is a complete list of sales. There are usually things included in the newsletter for subscribers that don’t appear on the blog.😉 It’s kind of like Instagram. I share things all week long in stories and on the grid that don’t necessarily make it here.
Have a wonderful Monday!!!!

I like tankinis too! Especially ones where the tops aren’t super form fitting around the waist since they are more comfortable and easy to move around in. In fact, I first found that sort of style waay back when for my honeymoon and have never looked back (though I have tried the occasional one piece and bikini).

Totally agree Joanne!
